What to do in a dental emergency - Winnipeg

For a Toothache

What to do

When you have a toothache, it's best to start with a phone call.  Call your dentist- toothaches can be caused by a variety of sources, so it's best to explain your symptoms over the phone to determine if you need to see the dentist right away.  At Northgate Dental Centre, we do take on same-day emergency appointments, so there is no reason to remain in pain!

Not near a dentist? What to do until then

If you just can't see your dentist right away, relieve the pain as best as you can at home.
We suggest taking over the counter pain medicine, such as Tylenol if this is safe to take for you, and then treat the affected area with an ice pack.  Frozen peas work well- hold this against your face, as close as you can to the sore tooth or sore area.

Do not treat the affected area with heat- this will not help the pain!

How much will it cost?

Typically, the treatment of most causes of toothache is covered by insurance.
If money is an issue, please call us at (204) 339-1738 to discuss the most affordable treatment option.
If you are self-employed, consider writing off the cost with a PHSP Plan (see our blog post "Dental Care for Self-Employed and Business Owners")

When you bite your lip or tongue

What to do

If your mouth is bleeding, use a clean cloth to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If your lip is swollen, use an ice pack to soothe and reduce swelling.  If the bleeding won't stop, go to an Urgent Care or Emergency Room to be treated right away!

How much will it cost?

If you must visit the Emergency Room for a badly bleeding lip or tongue, these costs will be covered by your provincial health insurance plan.

Lost Filling- what to do

What to do

Call your dentist and go in as soon as possible to have the filling replaced- you don't want to wait so go the same day when possible.  We take same-day emergency treatment for lost fillings, just give us a call at (204) 339-1738

Not near a dentist? What to do until then

If you must delay until you see a dentist, take a piece of softened sugarless chewing gum and place it where the filling should go. This will help to temporarily protect the area until you can see a dentist.

How much will it cost?

The cost of replacing a filling is usually covered by insurance.
If money is an issue, please call us at (204) 339-1738 to discuss the most affordable treatment option.
If you are self-employed, consider writing off the cost with a PHSP Plan (see our blog post "Dental Care for Self-Employed and Business Owners")

Something stuck in teeth or gums

What to do

Find yourself some dental floss and use it carefully! Do not rush, but instead, gently try, bit by bit, to work out the stuck object. Don't use anything sharp or pointy, as you might scratch your gums or the surface of your tooth.

If you can't get it out, come see us and we will help you to remove the object- just give us a call.

How much will it cost?

If you are one of our patients, we can provide this service for free. If you are not yet one of our patients, we will help you out for free providing you book your next dental appointment with us at the time of treatment.

A Knocked Out Tooth

What to do

Don't delay! Call your dentist right away!
If the knocked-out tooth is a permanent adult tooth, there is still a chance to put it back- but only if you act quickly. If you act within 10 minutes, the tooth can even take root again. Put that tooth right back into its socket immediately and call the dentist!
After two hours, this chance of the tooth taking root again is drastically reduced.
Visit your closest dentist right away. We do take on this type of same day emergency appointment- give us a call at (204) 339-1738.

Not near a dentist? What to do until then

Make sure your tooth looks clean, and try to put it right back in its place, right into the socket. Don't delay!
If you can't keep it in place, or fear you will swallow the tooth, put it into a glass of cold milk and bring it with you to the nearest dentist that will take emergencies.

How much will it cost?

This emergency is usually covered by insurance.
If money is an issue, please call us at (204) 339-1738 to discuss the most affordable treatment option.
If you are self-employed, consider writing off the cost with a PHSP Plan (see our blog post "Dental Care for Self-Employed and Business Owners")

A Chipped or Broken Tooth

What to do

Don't fret- we can almost always save your broken tooth! Call us right away to book a same-day emergency treatment appointment. For minor chips, we can use a white filling to repair the tooth- a more serious break might require a root canal, or a cap or crown.

How much will it cost?

This emergency treatment is usually covered by insurance.
If you don't have insurance, the cost will depend on the treatment needed, which will depend on the severity of the chip or break.
If money is an issue, please call us at (204) 339-1738 to discuss the most affordable treatment option.
If you are self-employed, consider writing off the cost with a PHSP Plan (see our blog post "Dental Care for Self-Employed and Business Owners")

Have you heard of Canada's PHSP tax write off strategy?
Here's the basics:

What it is
PHSP stands for Private Health Services Plan.  It is not a form of insurance- you do not pay month to month!

How it Works
Basically, a PHSP is a tax write-off. when you incur an approved medical expense, (any expense that qualifies for a tax write-off normally), such as most dental services.

There are three steps involved:

Step 1: Pay for your medical treatment.
Step 2: Submit the receipt for your payment to an approved third party administrator. (We list some of these at the bottom of this article).  This third party administrator will reimburse you for the full cost of your treatment.
Step 3: Your business pays back the administrator, and also pays a 5% administrative fee. (This fee is anywhere from 5%-15%, we recommend going with a 5% administrator!)

When it's time to do your taxes, you get to write off the entire cost, 100%, of the medical expense, as a full business expense!

Who can use this?

Self-employed entrepreneurs including contractors and freelancers, small business owners, medium business owners.  You can also use this tax write-off to pay for medical expenses for your family, and even for your employees.

Advantages over an insurance plan

A PHSP plan allows you to pay only for the costs that occur- you are not paying anything month to month, only for what you get, so PHSP can cost much less than insurance.

Employees might appreciate this, as you can offer them medical benefits through PHSP. Unlike insurance, instead of placing limits on certain types of services, you can simply give each employee an annual medical cost amount.

For example, you might offer each employee $2,000 of medical coverage a year, and your employees are free to use this as they choose- an employee might choose to strictly use this amount to cover massages, for example, while healthy employees might not incur any expenses at all.

How much of your medical expenses are you writing off right now?
The answer to this depends on your net income. For the federal medical expenses tax credit on Line 330 of your income tax return, you will enter the total amount of your claimable medical expenses and then subtract the lesser of 3% of your net income (line 236) or $2,109 (in 2012)  – the result being how much of your medical expenses you can actually claim.
(thank you TurboTax.ca for this info)

How much of your medical expenses can you write off with a phsp program?
100 % as a business expense

How Can I get Started?
Third party administrators help you through it.  Generally, you fill out a form and write a cheque to sign up.
Here are some great administrators to consider:

Brock Health Administration- They offer the lowest fee- just 5%, and they make it very easy to set up and run your PHSP

Where can I find more information?

At our information session this Saturday, April 12, from 3-4pm we will have an expert on hand to give a brief presentation and answer your questions- and if you wish to sign up, they are waving the fee at the event.
