For a Toothache
What to do
When you have a toothache, it's best to start with a phone call. Call your dentist- toothaches can be caused by a variety of sources, so it's best to explain your symptoms over the phone to determine if you need to see the dentist right away. At Northgate Dental Centre, we do take on same-day emergency appointments, so there is no reason to remain in pain!
Not near a dentist? What to do until then
If you just can't see your dentist right away, relieve the pain as best as you can at home.
We suggest taking over the counter pain medicine, such as Tylenol if this is safe to take for you, and then treat the affected area with an ice pack. Frozen peas work well- hold this against your face, as close as you can to the sore tooth or sore area.
Do not treat the affected area with heat- this will not help the pain!

When you bite your lip or tongue
What to do
If your mouth is bleeding, use a clean cloth to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If your lip is swollen, use an ice pack to soothe and reduce swelling. If the bleeding won't stop, go to an Urgent Care or Emergency Room to be treated right away!
How much will it cost?
If you must visit the Emergency Room for a badly bleeding lip or tongue, these costs will be covered by your provincial health insurance plan.
Lost Filling- what to do
What to do
Call your dentist and go in as soon as possible to have the filling replaced- you don't want to wait so go the same day when possible. We take same-day emergency treatment for lost fillings, just give us a call at (204) 339-1738
Not near a dentist? What to do until then
If you must delay until you see a dentist, take a piece of softened sugarless chewing gum and place it where the filling should go. This will help to temporarily protect the area until you can see a dentist.

Something stuck in teeth or gums
What to do
Find yourself some dental floss and use it carefully! Do not rush, but instead, gently try, bit by bit, to work out the stuck object. Don't use anything sharp or pointy, as you might scratch your gums or the surface of your tooth.
If you can't get it out, come see us and we will help you to remove the object- just give us a call.

A Knocked Out Tooth
What to do
Don't delay! Call your dentist right away!
If the knocked-out tooth is a permanent adult tooth, there is still a chance to put it back- but only if you act quickly. If you act within 10 minutes, the tooth can even take root again. Put that tooth right back into its socket immediately and call the dentist!
After two hours, this chance of the tooth taking root again is drastically reduced.
Visit your closest dentist right away. We do take on this type of same day emergency appointment- give us a call at (204) 339-1738.

Make sure your tooth looks clean, and try to put it right back in its place, right into the socket. Don't delay!
If you can't keep it in place, or fear you will swallow the tooth, put it into a glass of cold milk and bring it with you to the nearest dentist that will take emergencies.
